Every now and then this world is lucky enough to catch a glimpse of wonder before it vanishes off into the cosmos, like ‘Oumuamua.

That was the comedic powerhouse, Greg Giraldo.

For a brief moment way back in 2004 I crossed paths with him. Jamie Masada, owner of the Laugh Factory, had arranged for me to open for Greg one weekend at the club’s (now defunct) Times Square location.

I was in awe at how real and how gritty and how passionate Greg’s set was. I felt like a complete fraud as a comic after watching his honesty and power.

Though Greg Giraldo may be gone now, you’ll have no problem finding clips of his prodigious comedy legacy online. But what of the man, what of the person behind the punchlines?

Luckily, a new book is just out, Greg Giraldo: A Comedian’s Story. In it, authors Matt Balaker and Wayne Jones interview dozens and dozens of Greg’s family, friends and fellow stand-ups to give you an inside look at the life of one of the greats.

It even includes a foreword by Colin Quinn.
